Walking through some Civil War History

HARPERS FERRY

Harpers Ferry was like stepping back in time
Confluence of Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers View of Harpers Ferry from the highest point of the Overlook Cliff we hiked up to
The Harpers Ferry side of this bridge is in WV; the other side is in Maryland! We crossed this bridge to do a portion of the Appalachian Trail that took us to the Overlook Cliff

GETTYSBURG

In the Visitor Center there is a room where a Cyclorama fills the whole perimeter of the walls. It is an oil painting of the Gettysburg battlefield measuring 377’ in circumference and 42’ high. You pay to go into this room where you feel like you’re standing in the midst of the battle with sound effects and light flashes etc. Anyways after it was over and everyone was filtering out of the room Lynn was talking to one of the employees who showed him where to look to see that the cyclorama artist had painted in a wounded President Lincoln into the battlefield – representative of a wounded country – we felt pretty privileged to learn this interesting tidbit since it wasn’t mentioned during the show to the crowd that was in the room 🤓

Zoom in on this picture to see the red arrow I added to identify where the artist painted President Lincoln into the battlefield

We also went on a narrated bus tour of the battlefield. Hard to describe the somber feeling you get standing right on the ground where thousands of men died during this bloodiest 3 day battle, July 1-3, 1863. To hear the stories, visualize the scenes, the emotion and intensity of this event … can’t help but feel a heaviness in your chest 😔

We climbed up a huge tall tower to get these pictures Whew! 😅
Haha that’s our truck down way there!
jus havin a little fun

What a moving place, it’s incredible the things people endured for the modernity we enjoy today. Very neat about the statue being made out of a melted cannon too.

Haha awesome that you noticed that, and yes very cool that The Goddess of Victory and Peace was sculpted from a melted cannon!
